EPDM is a synthetic rubber membrane, the longest-established single-ply in commercial roofing, in service since the 1960s. It comes in large sheets, joined with seam tape or contact adhesive, and it handles the day-to-night thermal swings of West Texas without the weld fatigue of a thermoplastic.

EPDM is black by default, which absorbs heat. A ballasted system, loose-laid under river stone, protects the membrane from UV and hail and can deliver the longest service life of any low-slope system, at the cost of structural weight on the deck.
